3 Tips for Safe and Successful At-Home Teeth Whitening

Everyone wants to rock a beautiful smile and pearly white teeth, but not all people have the time or finances to visit a dentist for professional teeth whitening. This leaves the DIY option which is often affordable for most people. Unfortunately, with so many whitening products on the market today, at-home treatment is not always an ideal option. Some of these products can backfire or even cause sensitivity to your teeth. If you are thinking about carrying out DIY teeth whitening, the following tips will help you achieve a safe and successful treatment.

Go for quality products

Not every product that's labelled "teeth whitener" in the chemist or local store is safe for use. Instead of using a gel that whitens the teeth from the inside, most over-the-counter treatments contain harsh abrasives that wear away the enamel. Consider seeking professional help from a dentist before settling for a particular whitener. Alternatively, you can research on some of the best brands and ensure that the treatment product is in gel form.

If you have sensitive teeth, avoid products with a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide. In this case, you may want to go with about 10 percent hydrogen peroxide to prevent further sensitivity after using the whitening kit.

Follow instructions

Whitening products come in various forms of packaging and with different directions. Some are used once while others require a week or two of treatment. For the best results with no complications, follow the instructions on the packaging. For example, if the procedure requires you to leave the strips on for 20 minutes a day for ten days, follow it to the letter. Also, do not reduce or exceed the amount of gel that should be used at a single time as this can dramatically affect the results or lead to unevenly whitened teeth.

Look out for reactions

As aforementioned, at-home teeth whitening isn't always the best option for attaining a brighter smile.  It is possible for your teeth to respond sensitively to a product. What worked for your friend may fail to work for you as well. Look out for any reactions such as excessive sensitivity and pain or redness in the gums. If this happens, discontinue treatment immediately and visit a dentist for treatment. Do not wait out the pain as it can get worse with time or lead to further enamel damage.

Professional tooth whitening is the surest way to guarantee white teeth with no side effects and reactions. If at-home whiteners are not working for you, visit a dentist for consultation and proper treatment.
